The LSU football program revealed new gold jerseys on Monday evening, set to make their debut during Saturday’s night game against Vanderbilt, which kicks off at 7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
The gold jerseys follow the same design as LSU’s standard home white and purple alternate jerseys, featuring UCLA-style stripes on the shoulders, contrasting sleeve cuffs, and the SEC logo at the base of the collar. The only notable difference is the purple numbers, which are outlined in white on the front, back, and sleeves, compared to the single-color digits on the white and purple jerseys.
This will be just the fifth time in school history that LSU will wear gold jerseys. Previous occasions include a 35-0 victory over Vanderbilt in 1996, a 27-9 win over Notre Dame in the 1997 Independence Bowl, a 22-10 loss at Florida in 1998, and a 23-20 victory over Mississippi State in 2016.
LSU has not yet revealed which color helmets and pants will accompany the gold jerseys, but historically, they were paired with gold helmets and white pants in 1996 and 1998, and with white helmets and white pants in 1997 and 2016.
Since 1958, LSU has predominantly worn white jerseys at home. That year, head coach Paul Dietzel – known for his superstitions and uniform experiments – opted for white jerseys for all five home games. The Tigers went on to win their first national championship, defeating Clemson 7-0 in the Sugar Bowl. Dietzel, believing in the luck of the uniforms, kept the white jerseys as the team’s standard.
This tradition continued long after Dietzel’s departure, but the NCAA’s rule change in 1983 required teams to wear dark-colored jerseys at home, forcing LSU to wear purple jerseys until 1994. In 1995, coach Gerry DiNardo successfully petitioned the NCAA to allow LSU to return to white jerseys at home, though visiting teams had to approve this choice. Vanderbilt was the first to deny the request in 1996, prompting LSU to break out their new gold jerseys instead. This decision was likely influenced by DiNardo’s previous tenure as Vanderbilt’s coach.
