On Sunday, the Oregon Ducks football team announced a unique addition to its uniform closet.
As part of its effort to raise awareness of cancer and show support for those who have battled or are fighting it, Oregon unveiled a new yellow and black uniform called the “Heroes” uniform. A yellow jersey with black wings and diamond plating on the shoulders is designed by the Lanning family, and the uniform also features the “Stomp Out Cancer” logo on one shoulder and the “Flight + Fight” logo on the other.
The main color of yellow is acknowledgement of Sauphia’s battle with osteosarcoma. The uniform also features a yellow ribbon, which Sauphia sketched herself. The uniforms also feature an ice cream cone (which was how her family would treat themselves after her cancer treatments) and a molecular structure (which refers to her “red devil” chemotherapy treatment).
“So I was on a plane and I started sketching it out. It just kind of came to me,” Sauphia Lanning said. “One really cool thing that I’m so glad was kept was the medical symbol that’s put on for the doctors and the nurses, the true heroes.”
Several small details throughout the uniform pay homage to Lannings’ design ideas, such as yellow pants and a helmet with silver wings.
Sauphia Lanning, the wife of Oregon head coach Dan Lanning, survives bone cancer. This is the first time the family has contributed to the design of the Ducks’ uniforms.
On social media, the Oregon athletic department posted a touching video of the design process, which included contributions from Sauphia and her three sons.
In Autzen Stadium on Friday, Oct. 4, the Ducks will wear the Heroes Uniform against Michigan State.
